Discovery Call Cheat Sheet
30–45 minutes. Your goal: confirm fit, test motivation, and leave the candidate excited about next steps.
1. Opening
- Introductions & build rapport
Thank them for taking time. Be warm and authentic — this sets the tone for the whole conversation.
- Set expectations
“This is a 30-minute call. I’ll give you context on us, learn more about you, and we’ll see if there’s a good fit to move forward.”
2. Founder Pitch
- High-level traction
Exciting but concise. Don’t over-explain.
- Who you are
Why you founded the company.
- Mission
Problem + why it matters.
- Stage
Traction, funding, growth.
- The role
Why it’s critical at this moment.
Example
“We’re 7 people now, just closed our Seed, and this role is our first design hire — you’d own product experience end-to-end.”
3. Candidate Discovery
Core of the call — learn about them.
Background & Experience
- Walk me through your career so far — what’s been most exciting?
- Which projects are you most proud of?
Motivations
- What are you optimizing for in your next role?
- What would make you leave your current company?
- Why does our mission/company interest you?
Skills & Fit
- What do you enjoy most day-to-day?
- Where do you want to grow?
- What kind of team environment do you thrive in?
4. Candidate Questions
- Let them drive
“What would you like to know about us?”
- Be transparent but positive
Every answer is a chance to sell the opportunity and the team.
5. Closing & Next Steps
- Summarize fit quickly
“Based on this, I think there’s strong alignment.”
- Outline process
“Next step is a technical interview with X.”
- Timeline
Keep momentum under 2 weeks total.
- Leave them excited
Emphasize mission, energy and belief.
Example
“We’re selective, but when we find the right people, we move fast. If all goes well, we can get to an offer within ~2 weeks.”
Key Tips
- Be prepared — know their profile and projects in advance.
- Balance signal + sell.
- Conversation, not interrogation.
- Always follow up same day with thanks + next steps.
- Debrief in your notes immediately after (before memory fades).
Remember: A great discovery call is 50% signal and 50% sell. The best founders leave candidates feeling interviewedand inspired.
