Module 05 · Activity 2
Designing Your Discovery / Intro Call
The goal of the Discovery Call is not simply to have a conversation with the candidate — it's to generate strong signals that help you determine whether the candidate can succeed in the role and whether it's worth investing further time in the process.
Look back at Activity 1 and identify the requirements being assessed during your Discovery Call. For each requirement, design questions that will generate evidence — then assign scores and weightings, and decide what a pass or fail looks like for each skill.
Requirement 1
Examples: comfortable operating in ambiguity · can work without extensive process · has previously worn multiple hats · can prioritise independently · has experience in fast-moving environments
Technical / Experience Questions
Work Culture & Motivation Questions
Examples: provides specific examples · demonstrates ownership · shows excitement about startup environments · has previously solved similar problems
Examples: only worked in highly structured environments · struggles to give examples · avoids ownership · primarily motivated by title or prestige
Scores, Weighting & Pass / Fail
Score each candidate 1–5 on this requirement, then apply the weighting and pass/fail rule you set here.
